How to Play 2048

2048 is a sliding tile puzzle game. The goal is simple: combine matching number tiles until you create the 2048 tile.

Rules

  • Use arrow keys (or swipe on mobile) to slide all tiles in one direction
  • Every move slides every tile as far as it can go
  • When two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into one tile with double the value
  • After each move, a new tile (2 or 4) appears in a random empty spot
  • Game over when the board fills up and no more merges are possible

2048 Strategy Tips

  • Pick a corner: Keep your highest tile pinned in one corner (most players use bottom-left or bottom-right)
  • Don't move the big tile: Avoid swiping in the direction that would dislodge your largest tile from its corner
  • Build a snake: Keep tiles in descending order along an edge — like 2048, 1024, 512, 256 in a row
  • Only two directions: Advanced players mostly use two directions (e.g., left + down) to maintain control
  • Think ahead: Before each move, ask where the new tile might appear and whether it breaks your chain
